Brian Tamanaha kicked off the debate. My views are close to Larry Ribstein's. Self-serving regulation keeps law schools in a straitjacket, to the detriment of students and society and to the benefit of professors and existing lawyers. Let's re-introduce the bachelor's degree in law!

I don’t know why people just don’t see this for what it is: a rather shallow attempt to dump on school ranked lower than one thinks is acceptable. On top of that, I think it is a deliberate attempt to avoid explaining why and how the education and a higher-ranked school is objectively better.
Contrary to popular beliefs, the law taught at 4th tier schools is pretty much the same as law taught at 1st tier schools. Sure, in New York there is a canard that lower-ranked schools teach “New York law.” But, this just isn’t true.
