Interesting analysis here from Paul Caron at TaxProf Blog. It seems that some law schools opted not to disclose their graudates' employment rates so that they could avail themselves of the default value that would be factored into the rankings -- even though the default value inaccurately reflects reality. Of course, those schools might rationalize their conduct by saying, "there's nothing wrong with opting for a default value; it's our choice to be made in our own best interest."
Caron also notes that some schools reported actual stats that were lower than the default value, and tweaks those schools by asking if they committed malpractice by being honest. Caron's comment may be tongue in cheek or even meant to critique the gaming of numbers, so I certainly do not cast any aspersions about his motives. But the intuitively attractive comment about academic malpractice reflects the ease with which we all can slide from defensively rationalizing the fudging of numbers to convincing ourselves of the duty to fudge the numbers.
As I've said on this blog before, the law students are deeply aware of gaming, and when law schools game the numbers they unfortunately teach an awful lesson: that fudging the numbers is what grown up lawyers do.

Attention to:
Director General
Mr. Juan Somavia
International Labour Organization (ILO)
Date: 2009 August 23rd
Dear Sir,
I am Daw Htwe Htwe from Union of Myanmar whose full address is No, (188),
Maydarwi Road, D ward, North Okkalapa Township, Yangon, Myanmar. My
husband, Capt Aung Myint, who had made contract with Rishworth Aviation
Limited (RAL) and working in India Kingfisher Airline. He,Captain Aung
Myint while stationed on duty in Hydrabird, India passed away at
4thDecember 2007.
After he passed away, RAL took his left salary until now, ie, 23rd August
2009. SO RAL took for over 1 year and 9 month. I asked again and again.
I also hired lawyer and he also asked for me. But RAL give many reason
again and again.
My husband, Capt Aung Myint, was the sole bread winner in our
family and the loss not only affected us normally but financially also. RAL
also know that we cannot afford the cost of law suit. So, RAL took the
basis labor right of salary with unfairness, inhumanity and unethically.
As I am the citizen of Myanmar, I do not use to with English and
I am weak in English. As we are living in peaceful normal life, we do not
have much knowledge in Legal. Because of those RAL also took upper-hand on
contract.
Because I am weak in English, I cannot write subject matter in
specifically.
I would like to ask ILO for helping the family who lost the
basis labor right.
I also hope ILO will help us because ILO has been participating much in our
country affair.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Daw Htwe Htwe
