A family-run towing company used fraudulent lawsuits to build a lucrative stream of income. The victims were working class people who kept telling the commissioner that the suits were bogus. Eventually, the scammer sued an insurance company and a young lawyer, Greg Adler, stepped in, smelled fraud, and spent 1,200 of his own hours to bring the scheme to a halt -- and send the scammers to jail. Stories here and here.
I'm disappointed that the courts didn't step up and investigate Commissioner Gregory Saldivar a little more closely. I do not believe this scam could have been perpetrated without the active assistance of the commissioner hearing these cases. And yet, there he still is, hearing cases.
I'm also curious how such commissioners are selected.
