Not all school shootings can be prevented with gun laws, just as not all traffic deaths can be avoided with traffic laws and not all acts of terrorism can be prevented with counter-terrorism laws. But legislators -- and their staff attorneys who draft laws -- should try to reach an effective balance between individual liberty and public safety. The laws should also reflect the interests of the public not just the interests of campaign contributors.
But so long as NRA campaign cash has a firm grip on Congress, Congress will do nothing.
Lets just hope that the manufacturers of explosive devices and biological weapons do not team up with Al Qaeda to fund a similar lobby.
It is time to think about reform of our broken campaign finance system -- not just our liberal gun laws.
