From Prof. Robert Ahdieh -- more details in the continuation of the post:
Emory University is soliciting nominations of candidates to serve as Director of its Center for Ethics. As a member of the University's search committee, I'm hoping to ensure that candidates with interest in legal ethics are aware of the position, and consider applying. The substantive text of the University's announcement is excerpted below. In its own words, however, the University is looking for "an innovative and entrepreneurial leader with established ethics scholarship, who is capable of inspiring an increased commitment to research and scholarly productivity," thereby "accelerating the development of its Center for Ethics to national and international influence."
If you should want additional information, or have questions, please do not hesitate to be in the touch with me. Additionally, if you prefer, you can make direct contact with the chair of the search committee, Marshall Duke ([email protected]), of Emory's Psychology Department, or the the search consultant managing the search, Jon McRae ([email protected]).

THE OPPORTUNITY
Emory University seeks to accelerate the development of its Center for Ethics to national and international influence. This is an unparalleled opportunity for a visionary and transformational leader to pilot the refinement of an established Center for Ethics into a world-renowned Center for Ethics. The search is under way to identify a leader who can make this vision a reality.
The University has significant financial and intellectual resources with a global reputation for excellence and is located in Atlanta, indisputably a major international city known for its progressive approach to diversity, humanity, science, technology, and education. Emory’s proximity to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CARE, and the American Cancer Society and its partnership with the Carter Center of Emory University affords opportunities for strategic alliances that can have a major impact in the world.
Throughout its history, Emory has recognized the vital importance of ethical thinking and action. This deep ethical foundation makes Emory distinctive, resonates with University supporters, and provides a common thread and over-arching canopy for the signature themes directing the University’s future.
The Center for Ethics and the University believe that increasing joint appointments of faculty from the various schools of the University will bring coherence to the diverse ethics-related activities that currently exist.
A nationally-prominent Center for Ethics, recognized for excellence in ethical research, education and outreach will promote:
● ethical knowledge
● the translation of ethical thought into practice
● primary scholarship in ethics
● the development of moral meaning and ethical engagement in every day life
The Center for Ethics, founded in 1990, collaborates University-wide in scholarship and teaching; serves as an ethics resource within the university and for community agencies and organizations; and convenes conferences, community education programs, and interdisciplinary discussions on diverse ethical concerns. Moving forward, the goal is to expand the Center’s presence in research, scholarship, curricular development, translational ethics, faculty commitment, and policy development.
Currently, the Center has four faculty members (in addition to the new Director) and seven staff members, with programmatic emphases in Health Science Ethics, Ethics and Servant Leadership, and Science, Ethics, and Society.
An external Advisory Council of corporate/community leaders and an interdisciplinary faculty Board of Advisors support the Center. The new Director will report to the Provost.
THE CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be an innovative and entrepreneurial leader with established ethics scholarship, who is capable of inspiring an increased commitment to research and scholarly productivity. It is imperative that the candidate be respected and engaged as a scholar. Experience should include both practical and scholarly approaches with an appreciation of the bridge between the two.
The new Director will be called upon to provide effective leadership in articulating a vision for the Center’s development. Further, this leader must be prepared to work jointly with faculty and other constituencies in shaping a distinctive strategy to pursue this vision, which builds on the strengths of the University. Exceptional intellectual and well-developed interpersonal skills will therefore be essential.
Providing leadership and direction for the Center, as well as developing alliances with leaders across campus and externally, will be important. The Director will have demonstrated organizational and administrative skills, and be capable of promoting interdisciplinary participation by Emory faculty and staff. This will include the ability to identify, attract, and inspire accomplished scholars and to foster the development of ethics-related curricula in all schools at Emory.
The Director will be involved in fundraising and developing additional resources for the Center. This will require the ability to work effectively with potential donors and other external constituencies.
The Director will also be actively involved in budget development and implementation, as well as resource allocation decisions. Successful experience in these areas is desirable.
The successful candidate must be qualified for tenure at the rank of full professor in one of the University’s schools, as appropriate to the individual’s interests and scholarship.
