A proposed settlement in a class action against a Canadian bank includes a requirement that the bank contribute $14 million to a fund which will be used for initiatives related to legal ethics and professionalism at the 16 Canadian common law law schools. See article here. To my knowledge nothing of this kind has ever been part of a class action settlement in Canada. Has it ever been done in the US? Did schools compete for the funds? My anticipation is that there will be some cooperation amongst the Canadian law schools if this is approved. In our budgetary universe it is a significant amount of money.
