I had already started writing an article on this topic before the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission filed this Complaint against an attorney http://www.iardc.org/13PR0095CM.html. A client posted a couple of negative reviews about his attorney on AVVO. The attorney eventually responded by giving her side of the story, which revealed client confidences (this is at issue in Count II of the Complaint). One of the questions that I'm addressing in my article is whether the "self-defense" exception in Rule 1.6(b)(5) would ever authorize a lawyer to respond to a negative on-line review of the lawyer's services? Your thoughts?
