The WSJ has a piece discussing some emails from the IRS's Lois Lerner, highlighting the role of government lawyers in the scrutiny of conservative groups. To me, the story has been interesting because (1) lawyers actively deceived Congress; and (2) tracing the involvement of the lawyers can provide a thread for following what happened inside the IRS. Excerpt from Lerner's emails:
In a February 2011 email, Ms. Lerner advised her staff — including then Exempt Organizations Technical Manager Michael Seto and then Rulings and Agreements director Holly Paz — that a Tea Party matter is "very dangerous," and is something "Counsel and [Lerner adviser] Judy Kindell need to be in on." Ms. Lerner adds, "Cincy should probably NOT have these cases."
